Masquespacio Designs Stunning Student Residence in Bilbao
Masquespacio designed Resa’s San Mamés University Residence Hall in Bilbao for the Greystar group, which opened in September 2020. Resa, specialists in student accommodation, commissioned the multi-disciplinary award-winning studio to create the interior design of the public areas and develop its brand image.
Celebrated for her use of unexpected raw materials and her vibrant colour palette, a limited budget did not constrain Ana Milena Hernández Palacios, the studio’s creative director, from achieving high impact in the 1850 square-meter space. Involved from the earliest phase of the project, she maintained the original interior elements, notably the concrete floor, brick walls, and exposed ductwork, transmitting a decidedly contemporary industrial aesthetic. Modular glass walls divide the diaphanous layout into inter-connected zones. They close to create intimate, quiet areas or open for event spaces. The colour combination of reds and vibrant pinks with orangey-yellows adds vibrancy to the spaces. “Using the technique of color blocking, we obtained a strong visual impact, while, at the same time, we created a clear distinction between each zone in this open space,” says Ana Hernández.
