The Ritz Hotel in Madrid Reopens After Three-Year Renovation

Opened in 1910, during the Belle Époque era, the original building of the Ritz hotel in Madrid was designed and built under the supervision of hotelier César Ritz. Now part of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid recently reopened in April after a three-year historical restoration headed by Spanish architect Rafael de La-Hoz who retained the Belle Époque character of the iconic building. Renowned French interior designers Gilles & Boissier oversaw the design of the public spaces and the 153 rooms, which includes 53 suites. Located in the heart of Madrid, near to major tourist sites including the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and Reina Sofía Museum of Modern Art, the hotel has long been a destination for tourists and locals alike.

Chef Quique Dacosta, who has received a total of five Michelin stars for his restaurants, oversaw the gastronomy of the hotel’s five restaurants and bars. Each hast its own character, including Deessa, the signature fine dining restaurant located in the Alfonso XIII room, and the Palm Court restaurant, which serves continental breakfasts, light lunch plates, classic dishes with local and seasonal produce, and traditional afternoon tea.

The stunning glass canopy ceiling was reclaimed and carefully restored according to César Ritz’s original drawings and plans, which had been lost for eighty years.

The décor has a contemporary but timeless style with a soothing colour palette, and luxurious fabrics. The suite’s two windows overlook the hotel’s courtyard. All of the hotel’s embossed leatherwork is from Córdoba, a city famed for its leather artisans.
